Exhaust Fan Service & Inspections

A hood can only be cleaned as well as it can be reached. We inspect the exhaust system and find what gets in the way: missing fan hinges, too few access panels, worn belts and grease on the roof.

Rooftop upblast exhaust fan on its curb after cleaning

On many jobs we find the same problems. A rooftop exhaust fan has no hinge, so it can't be tipped open safely. A long duct run has no access panels, so parts of it can't be reached. Fan belts are worn, and grease runs out of the fan onto the roof.

Every one of these goes on your service report, with photos, so you or your contractor can fix it. We replace worn fan belts while we're there and add grease containment at the fan to protect the roof.

Need to know where you stand without a full cleaning? We also do stand-alone exhaust inspections, for example before you buy a restaurant or after a fire inspection.

What's included

What's included in exhaust fan service and inspections

System inspection

Hood, filters, duct and fan checked, with photos and written findings.

Exhaust fan belts

Worn or loose belts replaced. We record the belt size for next time.

Fan hinge checks

Fans without a hinge are flagged. A hinge lets the fan tip open for cleaning without damaging the curb or wiring.

Access panel needs

Duct runs that can't be reached are noted and photographed, so an access panel can be added.

Rooftop grease containment

Absorbent containment at the fan keeps grease off the roof membrane.

Inaccessible-area reporting

Anything that couldn't be cleaned is listed on your report, as fire code requires.

Questions

Questions about exhaust fan service & inspections

Why does my exhaust fan need a hinge?

So it can be opened safely for cleaning. Without a hinge, a rooftop upblast (mushroom-style) fan has to be lifted off its curb to reach the fan and the top of the duct. That risks damaging the fan, wiring and roof. Fire code (NFPA 96) calls for upblast fans to be hinged.

Can you inspect a kitchen exhaust system without cleaning it?

Yes. We offer stand-alone exhaust system inspections. They're useful before buying or leasing a restaurant, after a fire inspection, or to find out how often your kitchen really needs cleaning.
